Chapter Six

Brad ended up calling Billy and informing the man he was needed in town and couldn’t deliver donuts back to the farm. The town was in an uproar. Sophia Cunningham was trying to organize a lynch mob to go hang poor Rita and Rhonda—apparently life in jail was not enough for the likes of them—and all the old-timers were forming a meeting in order to decide how to hunt down and trap Phil Whinnel. Mayor Markerton was in the middle of a nervous breakdown and demanded Brad remain in town or be shot!

Brad, left with no other choice, stayed in town for the rest of the night desperately attempting to calm down the citizens—to no avail. By the time morning arrived, Mrs. Cunningham had convinced everyone that Rita and Rhonda Knight had killed Tom Denmore because the man obviously knew about Phil Whinnel’s gold—just as Billy had suspected. She also had managed to form a lynch party consisting of men and women more wrinkled than a prune; men and women determined to get their hands on Phil Whinnel’s gold. Mrs. Cunningham had become the official leader of the lynch party while Old Man Merkins was in charge of a party of men responsible for hunting down and trapping Phil Whinnel, leaving Brad with no choice but to threaten to arrest everyone if they didn’t settle down. Brad’s threat was greeted with a whole bunch of old men firing a whole bunch of rifles. Needless to stay, Brad didn’t stick around to argue anymore.

By the time noon rolled around, Mrs. Cunningham had her mob of people crowded inside of her shoe store keeping an eye out for Rita and Rhonda—assuming the two sisters would return to their bakery sooner or later—waiting to pounce like hungry lions holding wooden canes and walkers. Old Man Merkins had his team of expert trackers… uh… old men with canes and hunting rifles… scouring the woods surrounding Billy’s farm, as they assumed that’s where Phil Whinnel was most likely hiding. By noon the old-timers of Clovedale Falls had broken off into two distinctive groups: a lynch mob and a search party. Of course, the rest of the residents of Clovedale Falls carried on with their usual business, assuming the old-timers had completely lost their ever-loving minds, including Zach, who had been sent into town to study the situation.

“Crazy old people,” Zach said, slowly driving past Mrs. Cunningham’s store and spotting an old woman standing watch out front with an old six-shooter and a wooden cane. Zach rolled his eyes and aimed his truck back toward Billy’s farm, but not without stopping by Krispy Kreme and getting three dozen donuts first, including a dozen lemon donuts just for Chester. While driving back to Billy’s farm, he drove past dozens of old farm trucks parked on the side of the back road leading up the farm.

“What in the world?” he wondered, slowing down. He rolled down the driver-side window and stuck his head out. In the distance he heard a bunch of old men calling out Phil’s name.
